Where would we be if
we didn't have our Family History Society? Up the creek without a paddle,
that's where!
Trying to research your family history without using
your local Family History Society certainly is like rowing a boat without
a paddle.
Joining your local Family History Society is probably
the most important thing you should do when contemplating researching your
family tree. The amount of information held by many societies is
staggering. Even if the majority of your ancestors lived elsewhere, you
can still glean much information from your local society.
In addition, when you're just starting out in family
history, you will find many members of your local society have been
researching for a long time. By being a member yourself you will meet
other members who will be able to point you in the right direction and
save you time.
Whilst time spent researching is usually quite
enjoyable, it's nice to be able to find what you're after by a more direct
route!
There are also benefits in joining other societies, near
to where your ancestors lived. One such benefit is being able to include
the names you are researching in their journal, as there may be a local
member who is researching the same names and is willing to help you find
information!
Here's a link to the site of the
'Federation of Family History Societies' where you will find
contact details of most family history societies. If you have a 'Pop - Up
Blocker' you may have to hold down the 'Ctrl' key whilst clicking the
link. |
