Via the website, we have received an email from David
Cant.
David says;
"I am researching a group of building craftsmen who were active
in the Halifax area in the late C16 and C17. It includes several members
of the 'Akroyd' family, principally stonemasons. Some of them moved to
Oxford where they built parts of Merton College and the Bodleian
Library.
Details are in an article in the ' Transactions of the Halifax
Antiquarian Society of 1928'.
The transactions also have a number of articles on the Akroyd family,
including a pedigree drawn up in 1948, and in the transactions for 1911
the early history and connections with Akroyd in Wadsworth township,
grid ref SD 995 291, at Pecket Well, just north of Hebden Bridge. These
might be of interest to the people viewing our website.
The first mention of the surname in George Redmond's book on
Yorkshire surnames - Part 3, Halifax and District gives 1381 John de
Aykeroide. He also has references to the family in Doncaster and London
in the C15.
A site that might be useful to all Ackroyd researchers is:
http://www.cfhsweb.co.uk which is the Calderdale Family History Society."
Thanks for the information David.
If anyone visiting our website has any
information relating to C17 Akroyds, (however spelt), David would be
pleased to hear from you. Simply
email
us and we will forward it to David.
